Dark chocolate is healthy!
It is made from plants, which means that it contains many of the health benefits of certain vegetables. These benefits are from flavonoids which act as anti-oxidants. Dark chocolate contains a huge number of anti-oxidants – nearly more than eight times the anti-oxidants in strawberries.
The flavonols in chocolate help to keep the arteries from clogging and this leads to promotion of healthy blood pressure and thus a lessening of the possibility of heart disease. (It is the free radicals in the body that can cause the damage).
Other substances in chocolate are theobromine and anandamide, and of course, caffeine. The former two substances may have psychoactive properties which can lead to a feeling of general happiness and well being. Chocolate also appears to stimulate serotonin, since it contains tryptophan, and it may reduce sensitivity to pain. Serotonin is also an anti-depressant.
Chocolate does not appear to be involved in migraines or acne – good news for many!
What about the fat in chocolate?
The fats in chocolate are 33% Oleic Acid, 33% Stearic Acid and 33% Palmitic Acid.
Oleic Acid is a healthy monounsaturated fat that is also found in olive oil
Stearic Acid is a saturated fat, but has a neutral effect on cholesterol, in fact, dark chocolate has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol – the bad cholesterol.
Hence, 66% of the fat in chocolate is good for you!
Eating about 100gms of dark chocolate a day can give rise to the beneficial effects, while milk chocolate and white chocolate do not have the beneficial effects of dark chocolate.
